Gun Law Information Requested

READER Q&A

Q: I have a friend who moved from PA to AZ. He has 2 hand gun’s that his dad gave him. His dad passed away and the gun’s are not in his name. Can he sell them or will he need to transfer them into his name?

A: You are under the misconception that guns are “registered” in someone’s name. Neither PA or AZ have gun registration. This is not like a car or real estate property that is actually deeded or titled. If the deceased father in fact gave the son the guns, then the guns are the property of the son to sell as he wishes. Now, for your own records, ask for a simple Bill of Sale on the guns, so that you can document who you got them from.

What Kind Of Rifle Scope & Mounts Should I Use?

READER Q&A:

I have a .22 LR marlin 39a rifle and the scope I have is an Armsport scope. I am not sure if they are any good. I got one in really good condition no scratches or anything for 7 bucks at a yard sale..it is a 4×15. Would any type of scope mount work for it? Is the scope i got any good and was it a good buy for what I paid for it?

Take it to a local gunshop that has a gunsmith. Ask them for the mounts and rings for this gun and scope. Do not go to one of the major chain stores for this sort of thing. The 39A works well with the Weaver mounts. There are rings available for both the 1″ scope tubes and the 3/4″ tubes.

If it turns out that you do not like the results of your current purchase, you can do some comparison shopping at Rifle Scopes.

Has Your Shotgun Use Decreased Due To The Increased Price Of Lead Shot?

READER Q&A

Apparently, the price of lead shot has increased, which has caused sales of lead shot to decline. Are there people out there who are sensitive to the price of led shot?

Fortunately I saw this coming and stocked up on lead shot and loaded/reloadable hulls. I have about 5K of empty compression formed AA hulls about the same of Remington STS. I got a couple hundred pounds of lead shot in sizes that I commonly use. Then I also have 2, 20mm ammo cans packed full of shotshells in various loadings. I am also looking into making a furnace to produce lead shot from scrap wheel weights I stocked for casting pistol bullets. I am the cheapo “bubba” everyone speaks of. So, no, the price change hasn’t effected me yet, but it would have if I didn’t have my supplies.

My Uncle Has 8 Guns Verbally Promised To Me

READER Q&A:

Unfortunately, my uncle is dying. In the past he has promised some guns he owns to me but has not put his wishes into writing. What do I need to do to make sure I get them? I do have some greedy relatives whom I know would take them if his wishes are not in writing. And I heard if the wishes are not in a will and specifically named to someone that BAFTE will seize them amd they’ll probably see the cutting saws. My uncle has some good guns and even has a rifle that was used in a murder (he had purchased it in a private sale and didn’t know it was a murder weapon). I was planning to go to see him in September and talk to him about it.

Get him to put tags on the trigger guards with who each gun is supposed to be for. Get him to write down each gun, and ask him to put a little bit of the history of each gun, it’s “provenance” any interesting stories about each one, that he may or may not have told you. Part of the value of firearms as heirlooms isn’t their monitary worth, but their connection to us and to history. The ATF would not seize the guns, they’d simply be included with the estate, and sold. Their cash value is simply put in with everythign else sold from the estate. The best way to deal with firearms and greedy relatives is to get them valued (blue book of gun values) and subtract their value from your ’share’ of the cash. Make a point to see him before September, and not just for the guns – but because he is your uncle.

What would resale value be if I sold my used gun to a dealer?

READER Q&A:

I have a used Sig Saur P 235 semi automatic 40 caliber handgun. I need to sell this. I want to know what price I should be asking for when I try to re-sell to a dealer so I don’t get swindled. I don’t look like someone who would know much about gun sales, and to be honest I don’t.

My ex boyfriend convinced me to buy this gun and I’m sick of having it and want it off my hands, so need to sell it! It is barely used since I bought it – maybe less than a dozen times at the range. it was well taken care of prior to my owning it by a retired policeman.

Selling any gun to any dealer or pawn broker will get you a price well below the actual worth of the firearm, but it is a quick way to get rid of the gun. If money is a big issue, you could post an ad on Craigslist.com. I would specify selling terms such as: buyer must be a US Citizen, have valid Drivers License, be 18 or older, etc. Check your local laws too, the local Sheriff’s Dept can tell you where to find those. Don’t forget to add a picture. Personally, I wouldn’t sell it. Put it in a lockbox and forget about it – never know, you just might need or want it someday.

Why many steps in purchasing a firearm, and so few for ammunition?

READER Q&A:

In order to buy a firearm legally in California you must first successfully complete a firearms safety course, go through an extensive background check, find a licensed firearm dealer and wait out what I believe is a two week waiting period for handguns. But anybody over the age of 18 can walk into just about any major sporting goods chains store a purchase ammunition on the spot. It seems to me that if firearms have serial numbers, then bullets and casings should have some identifying markings as well. Imagine if bullets and shell casings had some some identifying serial numbers laser etched into them. To be able to tie a bullet, to at lot number, to a piont of sale, to a bar code, to a drive’s license and maybe to a murder. Something etched on the inside of thr casing and the “tail” end of the bullet itself. True crimminals obtain firearms illegally as a matter of course, but dare I say very few of them load their own amunition. Bullets that could be trace back to the purchaser.

Well I would think after someone went through all that crap they should get free ammo. Besides if what you are suggesting were implemented ammo cost would go through the roof, as if it already hasn’t. Ammo used to be registered on a federal level, but they found it to be useless. Also, Maryland passed a law some time ago requiring a fired shell casing be provided to the state police for every new handgun sold. NO crimes have been solved, and the police want the law repealed.

How much for a brass eagle paintball gun for sale?

READER Q&A:

My brass eagle paintball gun is for sale in a yard sale. It has never been used before and I have the mask, cleaning supplies and game flag. How much can I charge for it?

Which kind is it? The cheap saber pump, the slightly less cheap talon pump or one of their blowbacks like the striker or t-storm? Or is it the only good gun BE ever made, the Rainmaker? For any pump, $10 max. For any blowback, $20 max. For the Rainmaker, you could charge up to $100 if the person knew what it was.

You can also compare prices of new paintball guns for sale,
